Poking Each Other With Sticks Since 2006

OCTOBER & NOVEMBER STUDENTS RECOGNIZED

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

CHASE

Chase made Coach Joyce very proud with his great performance in September’s Free Fencing Exchange.  With only several months of one-on-one training, Chase managed to win the majority of his bouts against more “senior” opponents.  His demeanor on “the strip (piste)” showed not only a confident fencer, but one with maturity (not disputing touches) and most importantly of all… showing the patience and control to exercise the techniques he was taught.  The tendency of most beginning students are to “poke, swing & hack”.  Chase was actually “fencing.”

MOST IMPROVED STUDENT

THOMAS

Thomas is a member of Coach Joyce’s Mocksville Group and is this month’s (October & November) “Most Improved Student.”  Thomas began his fencing practice doing several things:  exercising good distancing (measure), using effective & strong parries, and acknowledging the techniques that work inside a bout.  Within the past month, Thomas has improved greatly, winning most of bouts with his classmates.   Beyond the act of winning,… it was HOW he won that most impressed me.  Thomas is truly starting to get a firm grasp on distancing and is varying his attacks based more on his opponent’s weaknesses and less on uncontrolled counters/reaction.
